NSW ARB Partnership Projects outcome announced
The NSW ARB is proud to support From Design Intent to Built Outcome: The Architect’s Role in Sustainable Domestic Construction in NSW, a research collaboration between UNSW Sydney and University of Sydney examining what happens to sustainability goals as housing projects move from design into procurement and construction.
The NSW Architects Registration Board (NSW ARB) is committed to supporting research that demonstrates the value of architects and architecture, advances public understanding and contributes to better outcomes for the built environment.
As part of this commitment, the NSW ARB is supporting From Design Intent to Built Outcome: The Architect’s Role in Sustainable Domestic Construction in NSW, through its 2026 NSW ARB Partnership Projects program.
Led by Assoc Professor Luciano Cardellicchio from UNSW Sydney and Dr Paolo Stracchi from the University of Sydney, the research team also includes Assoc Professor Melonie Bayl-Smith and Assoc Professor Riccardo Paolini from UNSW Sydney.
Through six NSW case studies, the two-year project will explore how architects, builders and clients collaborate to deliver sustainable outcomes, with a focus on materials, building envelope performance and electrification. It will examine how sustainability goals in domestic housing projects are maintained, negotiated or lost as projects move from design into procurement and construction.
The project follows the NSW ARB’s Call for Proposals for NSW ARB Partnership Projects, which invited academics from accredited architecture programs in NSW to submit proposals for research aligned with the objects of the Architects Act 2003.
NSW ARB Partnership Projects create opportunities for the NSW ARB to work with NSW academics on research that investigates relevant questions, demonstrates the value of architects and architecture in NSW, and informs the strategic priorities of the NSW ARB, NSW Government and/or industry.
The research is expected to produce practical tools, CPD resources and guidance to support architects and contribute to more sustainable domestic construction practices across the state.
The NSW ARB looks forward to following the project as it develops and sharing its findings and practical outcomes with the profession, government and broader community.
