Modernising the Modernists
Conservation, Heritage
United States
An investigation and analysis of current and recent international examples of the modification and adaptive reuse of Modernist buildings. The report investigates the treatment of two recent North American examples of adaptation the Palm Springs Tramway Gas Station, by Albert Frey, and PSFS Building Philadelphia, by George Howe and Henry Lescaze. This is augmented by an assessment of a European case study, the Lingotto Fiat Factory Turin Italy, Giacomo Matte Trucco.
The intention of the report is to reveal a snapshot of international methodology and practice in this field which, in turn, may inform and enrich local discourse on the treatment of Australia’s Modernist Architecture.
