This study looks at data gathering projects in urban spaces. It examines the idea of the smart city and how it is applied in practice. It ask; what does the internet of things mean for our public spaces?. Projects examined include Link NYC, a project to replace 7500 payphones with high-speed Wi-Fi kiosks, and Array Of Things, Chicago, an urban sensing initiative.
Using interviews with data, placemaking and urban planning specialists it gathers information on approaches to urban data initiatives and recommends a more place specific, community and humane approach.
