Cool Living in 'Hot Dry' Climates

Housing, Communities, Ecology & Environment, Aboriginal & Indigenous Architecture
Australia, United States

Climate change is not a future challenge for remote Australia, it is already present in homes, communities and household budgets. This report documents Bobbie Bayley's 2024 Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship research into climate resilience in existing Aboriginal Community housing across the Northern Territory's hot-dry regions. Through national and international travel, direct engagement with researchers, housing providers and advocacy organisations, the scholarship advanced Cool Living, a practical framework for improving the thermal performance of legacy housing stock. The report identifies where the knowledge exists, and where the real gaps lie: in decision-ready tools, funding cycles that reward speed over quality, and a persistent failure to invest in the housing where need is greatest.
