Re-Designing the Australian Dream

Philip Graus / 1992

Housing
United Kingdom, Australia, United States

The study of medium density housing seeks to address affordable housing in Australian cities. The primary aim of the study was to examine overseas examples of suburban projects that address the issue of higher densities. Specifically the author examined examples in the United States and United Kingdom. Seminal examples of early suburbs have also been included.

The report is divided into five parts, beginning with an Introduction and Background on the role of government and affordable housing initiatives. In the United Kingdom and the United States, the history and theory of the Garden Suburbs and New Towns is documented, particularly in relation to the utopian ideals which fuelled their development. Part 3, “The Contemporary Suburb” and Part 4, “The Future of the Suburb” conclude the study, by looking at various forms of compact suburban types that have been built in the United Kingdom and United States.
