This is a study of approaches to mental health and care in the urban environment. The goal of this research is to discover the role of architecture as both building and care system, providing leading models of therapeutic mental healthcare facilities in urban settings.

This research investigates new models reconceptualising traditional systems and encouraging a more cohesive network of diversified interventions. The author provides case studies of architect designed mental health facilities or support services in Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, United Kingdom and Sweden. These projects vary in built response, type and level of care provided, but all present an alternative to traditional institutionalised care and redefine the relationship patients have with their mental health and environment.
