This report investigates key shifts over the last 15 years in art gallery & museum design to document the impact of evolving curatorial agendas, contemporary art practices, innovative technologies and new urban design approaches on the architecture of an art gallery.

The focus of this research is issues pertaining to design of contemporary art galleries and the shifts in contemporary gallery design practices across Japan, Europe and America, with a focus on buildings newly built or restored in the last 15 years. The report investigates 18 art galleries to illustrate, through examples, a range of solutions and design strategies. The goal of the research is to identify relevant lessons for the Australian context, architectural practitioners and cultural institutions.
