Architectural Practice
Australia, United States

This report examines the role and obligations of architects and citizens in making the city for the
common good. It’s purpose was to meet and interview leaders of the built environment in both Sydney and New York to identify roles in city making.

The first part of the report presents the Sydney interviews as an essay. The author interviewed 8 architects, planning professionals and politicians. Then the High-Line in New York is examined as an exemplar grass-roots project that transformed a city for the better. The second part of the report introduces four interviews from New York, and presents some approaches that could be used to inform practice in Australia.
