The NANA Project

The NANA project advocates for a better built environment for older people. The project studied 13 aged care residential developments in Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark and Netherlands.

Its premise is that the traditional ‘nursing home’ and ‘retirement village’ are not only outdated, they can actually foster separation and ‘otherness’, isolating people from their family, friends and interests. The aim of this project is to explore how architects can design better environments for older people that improve their enjoyment of life and to try and readdress how we as a profession approach designing for older people to improve the outcomes for us all.

This research explores three broad objectives to inform a new architecture for the new aged; happiness, normality and equality.
