The Brutalist Project Sydney

This study surveys Brutalist period buildings within the greater region of Sydney and seeks to share this information with the community at large.

The goal of this research project is to examine the architectural importance of a much maligned period of architectural history and to present this via a six part ‘multi-platform’ strategy utilising social media and a variety of public programs.

Given the recent demolition of so many Brutalist buildings across Sydney and the limited recognition from various Governments, these buildings require significant community support for their recognition and ongoing protection.

The report takes the form of an inventory of 56 significant projects titled The Legacy Projects presented chronologically as a visual essay, and an accompanying thematic study. Three appendices identify the range of Brutalist wall finishes, the Sydney-based architectural practices that adopted the Brutalist ethos, and significant Brutalist projects now lost.
