Housing
Europe, Australia

A study of the architectural refurbishment of post-war modernist social housing, a recent development in the push to house an increasing population.

This study aims to outline and understand the social and architectural impacts of social housing refurbishment. Through travels to successful refurbishment projects in Europe and interviews with the architects, the author provides a body of knowledge as to the approaches and challenges of social housing retention. A number of case studies are included that provide key examples of modernist social housing refurbishment of exemplary architecture sensitive to the context and of benefit to the existing community.

The research project then applies the lessons learnt to a local context with the Waterloo social housing estate in Sydney.
