Data-Informed Design

Jordan Mathers / 2019

Urban Design, Digital Technology

This report is focused on the implementation of new technologies in the design industry, specifically the myriad of ways that data can be used by designers in architecture and urbanism and how innovations in the field are being explored to advance the resilience, equity and flexibility of our cities.

It identifies that few architectural firms explore the full offering of advanced technologies and computational applications and that the AEC industry lags behind in almost all other industries in relation to digitisation. The report includes interviews with prominent researchers in the field of urban science, Charles Catlett and Fábio Duarte, and Topos, a location intelligence company and a survey of approaches towards the use of data that designers may consider using in practice to create more evidence-based decisions.
