The AACA Architectural Practice Examination (APE)

The Architectural Practice Examination (APE) is a national examination developed by the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) in conjunction with Architects Registration Boards.  It has been in operation in its present form since 2000.  It is coordinated nationally by AACA which provides all examination documents and monitors implementation and examination results. Quality assurance processes are in place for all aspects of the APE to ensure nationally consistent application of examination procedures
The April 2009 APE session will be conducted against the September 2003 version of the National Competency Standards in Architecture.

The AACA National Competency Standards in Architecture are standards developed by the profession and accepted by all Architects Registration Boards in Australia as defining the minimum level of knowledge and experience necessarily for a person to enter the architectural profession.

Successful completion of the APE gives candidates eligibility to apply for registration as an architect with any Registration Board in Australia.

The APE consists of three parts:
  • Part 1 -   Assessment of Eligibility for Admission to the Examination
  • Part 2 -   National Examination Paper
  • Part 3 -   Examination by Interview
The NSW Architects Registration Board conducts the National Examination Paper twice each year. See APE Calendar to be published from December 2009.

For further details, see Circular of Information 3- AACA Architectural Practice Examination.

Part 1 - Eligibility

The hours and levels of experience required across the Mandatory Elements of Prescribed Competencies (sections 3.1.6 and 3.1.7 of NCSA 01/GC and section 5.2 of NCSA 01/LG) are as follows:

Minimum total of 120 hours of experience at Executive level across at least three of the mandatory elements of competency

No more than 160 hours of experience at Observer level in each of Elements 3.2.3 and 3.3.1. These are the only two Mandatory Elements in which Observer experience is accepted.

Frequency of examination periods

The Board conducts 2 examination sessions, in March-May and July-October.

The Board holds a free briefing seminar each year to provide information about the examination process, requirements and fees.  Attendance to this seminar is not compulsory before an application for Part 1 & 2 can be lodged.  To book a seat for the briefing seminar contact the Board's office or email mail@architects.nsw.gov.au.
